The Havanese is a small, sturdy companion dog with a long, untrimmed coat, a plumed tail carried over the back, and a lively, springy gait. The expression is soft, and the coat may be straight or wavy.

Description:: The Havanese is the companion dog of Cuba, descended from Mediterranean bichon-type dogs that reached the island with Spanish trade. It is the National Dog of Cuba. The AKC places it in the Toy Group; the UKC classes it as a Companion Dog.
Temperament:: Havanese are typically outgoing, people-oriented, and eager to be in the middle of the household. They can be vocal and do not enjoy being left alone all day. They are usually good with children who treat them kindly.
Training:: They learn tricks and household manners quickly. Keep sessions short and upbeat.
Care & Grooming:: The long coat mats if it is not brushed to the skin several times a week. Many owners keep a shorter clip for easier care.
Shedding:: Low; loose hair is held in the coat.
Health:: Havanese may develop patellar luxation, deafness in some lines, and eye problems. Ask breeders about health testing.
Lifespan:: 14–16 years
Litter Size:: 4–6 puppies
