The Patterdale Terrier is a small, hard-bitten working terrier with a smooth, broken, or rough coat, usually black. The body is compact and the expression is keen. This is a working type, not a heavily trimmed show terrier.

A tough working terrier for a yard and a job; short or broken coat, a sharp voice, and little interest in idle indoor life.

The Patterdale Terrier comes from the fell country of northern England, where it was used to bolt fox. It is a working terrier more than a companion breed. The UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Temperament

This is a game, independent earth dog. It is typically loyal to its hunter and too much dog for a household that only wants a quiet pet. Prey drive is very high.

Training

Be consistent and give the dog a job. Without work, a Patterdale will invent trouble.

Care and grooming

Brush the coat weekly. Rough coats need occasional stripping.

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. As with other small working terriers, watch for injuries from underground work and keep the dog lean.
