Purebreds

The term "dog breed" is used to refer to a group of dogs that are closely-related and visibly similar, possessing a set of inherited and distinguishing characteristics, such as size, coat color, intelligence, temperament, sense of sight and smell, and hearing.  An individual dog is identified as a member of a breed through proof of anestry, using genetic analysis or written records of ancestry.  Without such proof, identification of a specific breed is not reliable.  Such records, called stud books, may be maintained by individuals, clubs, or other organizations.

The dog breeds listed on Creature.com are recognized by one or more of the following three major English-language kennel clubs:
American Kennel Club (AKC)
Canadian Kennel Club (CKC)
United Kennel Club (UKC).

Additionally, there is limited information on breeds that are recognized by one or more of the following kennel clubs:
Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC)
The Kennel Club (KC)
Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA)
National Kennel Club (NKC)
New Zealand Kennel Club (NZKC)

The descriptive information found on Creature.com for each dog breed is for general information only for dog owners and potential dog owners.  For additional information, or for show dog standards, please refer to the specific kennel club standards for the breed.

To see a description and picture of a dog breed, click on the name of the breed in the list on the left-hand side of the page.  Or, use the menu above to browse by breed size, kennel club (accreditation), or breed class (kennel club grouping).
